Wool rugs as part of your home

We’re biased – we don’t believe there’s a better, more quality material out there for residential rugs than wool. Sure, all that synthetic fiber and nylon is easy to produce, and often easier to clean, not to mention cheaper, but when you think about it, what’s cosier than a sheep’s warm wool underneath your feet? If you or your family spend extra time on the rug, in the form of, say, children playing on the rug for hours each day, then wool has even less competition in other materials. Just knowing how much care went into breeding the sheep before it was ready to part with its warm wool gives one a cozy feeling. What’s awesome about wool rugs is that they are resistant to spills and fire on their own.

While fire can destroy your rug, same as any other, it won’t actually cause it to ignite, as mother nature made woolen fibers self-extinguishing. A similar benefit is offered in the form of natural spill protection. The liquid poured onto the carpet will remain suspended and not seep through the carpet as is usually the case, up until the fibers are sufficiently soaked in the liquid. So if you’re quick to act, you can deal with a spill with minimal effort. Conversely, wool rugs need more dedication and cleaning care than mo st other rugs, and are only recommended to responsible owners. Pets love wool and your dog left out of check for a few minutes can irreparably ruin your fine wool carpet by causing a stain that can’t come out. The wool might also give these pets an added incentive to try and destroy the carpet, or mess with it, but they might end up having a harder time doing this than they usually would, as wool’s durability is great; tremendous when compared to some other fiber types. As durable as wool is, it can easily be damaged with a highly alkaline cleaner, often causing stains as well. Since you paid extra for your wool carpet, don’t treat it like a synthetic mesh of fibers that absorbs wear and tear until it gets replaced. This one might seem obvious, but you don’t want to use a wool carpet for a high traffic area, as needless destruction of the carpet will follow as it loses more and more of that refined cushiness. Instead, choose a location truly deserving of it, such as the living room or the children’s room. If you must clean it, don’t use any of the methods you’ve become accustomed with cleaning other carpets, as it might spell trouble. Instead, take the time to look deeper into the appropriate, step-by-step ways to clean these natural works of art. We say natural because, even if the rugs are man-made, the fact that real wool has been used predominantly in the process gives it a greener feel hard to describe to a synthetic carpet owner. With the right cleaning and care, your wool carpets might one day be enjoyed by your children or even grandchildren in all of their beauty and colorfulness.
